Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership's Building a Better Warren (BABW) program connects the need for true, resident driven community revitalization with job creation, putting residents to work in full time, year-round jobs doing the work of blight remediation. Both the jobs component of BABW and the work taken on by the BABW team are direct results of TNP's execution of neighborhood plans. The plans identified an immediate need for work around demolitions (pre-demolition deconstruction and salvage work as well as post-demolition greening work and ongoing maintenance) and a longer-term need for renovation work in salvageable properties and ongoing repurposing of salvaged materials.
In 2016, TNP was awarded a $225,000 Community Economic Development (CED) grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that provided start-up equipment, individualized financial education to LMI team members, and the construction of a Community Workshop space.
This training session will provide an in-depth discussion of the workforce development and job creation efforts in the City of Warren. We will discuss how TNP was able to create and sustain the program and the successes and failures they have dealt with over the past five years. Topics discussed include: job creation, reclaiming vacant land, the federal CED grant, and bringing a plan to life to create systemic changes in your community.
